Dallas Duo Win Observer Funk R&B Award
The Dallas Observer recently held it's yearly music awards show highlighting local talent that is superceding the odds and one local duo came out on top this time.
Common Folk, composed of blood brothers, Tony Ballard and Terry Williams (both products of Skyline High School) won in the R&B/Funk category after losing out last year to the queen herself, Erykah Badu.
However, the duo doesn't think about last year. “We're focused on right now,” says Ballard. “If we keep looking back, we're liable to miss the present.”
Common Folk started in 2001 after being invited to be the music entertainment for the Sunday evening poetry sets hosted by Dallasblack.com, which at the time was at Caribbean Grill. From there it moved to the Main Street Internet Cafe where Common Folk set off and running.
Since that time, Common Folk has opened for Universal recording artist, Kem and performed in venues all around Dallas and Atlanta. Most recently, Common Folk was in California spotted out with Kanye West and his crew. Who knows what's brewing there?
Either way, Dallas has a reason to be proud of its' growing musical legacy and Common Folk is blazing the path. Catch Common Folk each Thursday night at the Velvet Hookah. 2712 Main Street in Deep Ellum.
